After you graduate from an MSW program, your next step may be preparing for a licensure exam. Social work licensure requirements vary from state to state, and you will need to pass a test as a part of your application process.

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) offers a variety of to help you prepare for its exams, which are used to apply for licensure across the country.    The ASWB offers four exams: Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical.  Check your state’s requirements to find out which one is needed for your licensure application.

Each is exam is a four-hour electronic test with 170 multiple-choice questions, designed to test your general social work knowledge, competency in the field, and your skills and abilities to deal with specific situations where social work intervention is needed.  See a sample question and more information about test structure here.

While licensure exams are challenging, you can be confident that an accredited MSW will help you to prepare for the questions you’ll encounter on the examination.  In addition, completing your MSW online may increase your comfort level with internet-based testing, as you’ll have ample experience with online coursework before completing your licensure exam.  Applying for a master of social work program is the first step on the path toward seeking professional licensure in the social work field.
