Virginia Social Work License Requirements

  • Must hold a Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW)(must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB (Bachelor level) Exam

Associate Social Worker (ASW)

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB (Master level) Exam OR ACSW Exam

Licensed Social Worker (LSW) 

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB Bachelors level Exam

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be a clinical course of study and CSWE-accredited)
    • For non-clinical MSW degree-holders, an additional 600 hours of supervised clinical experience will be required
  • Must have completed ASWB Clinical level Exam
  • Minimum of 3,000 hours of post-MSW supervised clinical experience
