West Virginia Social Work License Requirements

View the West Virginia Social Work License requirements for Level A, B, C, and D roles including LSW, LGSW, LCSW and LICSW.Level A – Social Worker (LSW)

  • Must hold a Bachelor’s in Social Work (BSW)(must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB (Bachelor level) Exam

Level B – Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB (Master level) Exam

Level C – Certified Social Worker (LCSW)

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be CSWE-accredited)
  • Must have completed ASWB (Advanced-Generalist) Exam

Level D – Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

  • Must hold a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) OR a PhD in Social Work (must be a clinical course of study and CSWE-accredited)
    • For non-clinical MSW degree-holders, an additional 600 hours of supervised clinical experience will be required
  • Must have completed ASWB Clinical level Exam
  • Minimum of 2-years/100 hours of post-MSW supervised clinical experience
